Founded in 1928 and designed by W and TR Milburn, Dominion Theatre London is an art deco, Grade II listed building in the West End of London. A former cinema-theatre combo, Dominion Theatre is a West End theatre located on Tottenham Court Road in the Borough of Camden London.
Britain's Got Talent held their London auditions in Dominion Theatre and many popular shows have played here over the years, from Queen’s long-running musical We Will Rock You, to War of the Worlds.
Following a six million pound refurbishment in 2017, Dominion Theatre London unveiled the largest and highest resolution projecting screen on the exterior of a West End theatre.
As well as popular West End musicals, Dominion Theatre London also hosts many regular charity events such as West End Heroes supporting service men and women, MADTrust's West End Eurovision, and Hillsong Church every Sunday.
An interesting fact is Dominion Theatre London was built on the same site as the former Horse Shoe Brewery which caused the London Beer Flood in 1814.
Dominion Theatre London hosted the Judy Garland Show in 1957 as its first major use as a live venue with films being shown at other times. Dominion Theatre London was also a popular music venue in the 1980s with Tangerine Dream's album Logos being produced there in 1982. The album contains a song called ‘Dominion’ as a tribute.
Since the 1990s, notable productions at Dominion Theatre London include Notre Dame de Paris, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Scrooge: The Musical, and David Ian and Paul Nicholas' new production of Grease. Also in the 1990s, the Royal Variety Performance featured at the Dominion Theatre London a number of times.
With a capacity of 2,182, Dominion Theatre near Mercure Hyde Park retains its beautiful art deco plasterwork and 1920s light fittings.
