First opened in 1889, Garrick Theatre London is steeped in history and is famous for its productions of comedies and melodramas. Author of over 75 plays, including the Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas, playwright W. S. Gilbert originally financed Garrick Theatre London. It is named after one of the most influential Shakespearean actors, David Garrick. Designed by Walter Emden and C.J Phillips, Garrick Theatre London is an impressive construction built over an underground river.
Garrick Theatre London is located on Charing Cross Road in London's West End, only two minutes on foot from the National Gallery in London.
One of London’s most renowned West End theatres, Garrick Theatre London’s first ever play in 1889 was The Profligate by Arthur Wing Pinero. It made its name with The Notorious Mrs. Ebbsmith, another Arthur Wing Pinero play. Other notable performances over years include No Sex Please, We're British, playing for 4 years in the 1980s.
After it was purchased by Stoll Moss Group in 1986, Garrick Theatre London had its gold-leaf auditorium renovated by stage designer Carl Toms . In 1997 the front façade was also restored.
Nimax Theatres Ltd purchased the Garrick Theatre London in October 2005, making it one of five London theatres operating under the same company. Lyric Theatre, Apollo Theatre, Vaudeville Theatre and Duchess Theatre are all part of the Nimax Theatres family.
