One of London’s most iconic summer events is Notting Hill Carnival: taking place over the last August bank holiday weekend, on 25th and 26th August, this internationally renowned festival celebrates Caribbean culture and traditions in London, attracting over a million visitors each year.
Originally held in 1966 as an offshoot of the Trinidad Carnival, this lively, vivacious celebration is now Europe’s largest street festival. It’s a feast for the senses: watch brightly-coloured floats and costumed performers winding their way through west London streets, as more than 50,000 performers take part in the carnival parade; soak up the sounds of steel bands and calypso music; and tantalise your taste buds with endless tempting Caribbean food stalls.
There is an impressive breadth of music: live music stages showcase both exceptional established talent and, thanks to 2018’s introduction of the Wilf Walker Community Stage, exciting emerging artists from the local community; and enjoy top-quality recorded music, too, as Notting Hill Carnival is the only full-scale carnival to feature static sound systems.
If you’re visiting as a family, Children’s Day on Sunday 25th August is the best day to join: quieter and more relaxed than the Monday, Sunday features special children’s group parades and a plethora of family-friendly activities for all ages to enjoy.
Many roads are shut during Notting Hill Carnival; but as we’re located less than two miles away, you’ll have an easy journey to and from the festivities! Beat the crowds and make the most of this vibrant weekend by staying with us at the Mercure Hyde Park.
